What is Electronic Travel Authorization

An Electronic Travel Authorization – eTA Canada is a travel document that is used by people who are citizens of countries that do not need visas to enter Canada. It allows the holder to enter Canada and even board a flight or other means of traveling.

ETA allows the holder to enter Canada and visit family and friends or even travel around, but the holder is only allowed to stay for a short period of six months or even less. The holder of such a passport will not be allowed to stay permanently or apply for Canadian citizenship.

Requirements For eTA Canada

To be eligible for eTA in Canada, you must meet up a few criteria. These criteria include;

  • You must come from one of the countries that are allowed to apply for eTA
  • You must own enough funds to cover your stay in Canada
  • You must have a valid passport issued by your government.
  • You must not have a criminal record.
  • You must be at least 18 years old and if you are less than 18 years old, a parent or guardian must apply on your behalf.
  • You must intend to return to your home country and have strong ties to your home country
  • You must not intend to study or work in Canada.
  • You must be healthy and without any dangerous medical problems which might make you seek medical treatment in Canada that you cannot afford. If you will be seeking medical treatment in Canada, you must state that and prove you have enough funds to cover your hospital visits and treatment.

How To Apply For eTA Canada

Before you proceed to apply for the eTA, you must make sure that you meet the requirements above. To apply, you need to visit the official Government of Canada website, which is the only place you can apply for an eTA.

Once you visit the website, you need to provide them with the following details;

1. Whether you are applying for yourself or someone else if you are applying for someone else you need to put in your personal information too.

2. the travel documents which you are using to apply for the eTA such as;

  • The country that has issued it
  • The number of that document (passport number)
  • Date when it was issued and date of expiry

3. Provide other personal information such as;

  • Your first and last name
  • Gender
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Marital status

4. Provide details of any previous visit to Canada

5. Employment information if any

6. Residential address

7. Travel information such as;

  • Dates of travel to Canada
  • Flight number (if you have already booked your travel)

8. background questions such as;

  • Previous refused applications for a visa in Canada
  • Criminal history
  • Medical history

9. Consent and declaration (date and signature)

When applying, make sure that you submit the right passport number and information. This is because if you put in the wrong information, you will not be able to board your flight even if your eTA was approved.

eTA Canada Processing Fees

Once you have inputted your information and submitted it, you will be taken to a site where you are required to make payment for the eTA application. Each eTA cost CAD$7, and you are required to pay the fee before your application is submitted.

Once you do so, you will receive an email confirmation that your application is being processed.

How Long Does it Take to Process eTA?

Applications for eTA take a few minutes to process after the application has been submitted. An email will be sent to you stating that you were approved.

Most times, they are cases where eTA processing takes a few days, but it will likely not take more than one week, and your approval will be sent to you.

When you travel to Canada you will only need your passport and no other documents, your passport has the eTA electronically and the officials will scan it to see if it has been approved.
